Wave Surfing in Zanzibar – One of the Island’s Few True Spots

Zanzibar is famous for flat-water lagoons, but real surfable waves are rare. Kiwengwa Beach, home to Duotone Pro Center Zanzibar (DPC) at Mvuvi Boutique Resort, is one of the only places on the island where you can truly ride ocean waves.

Located on the northeast coast, Kiwengwa benefits from Indian Ocean swells, warm water year-round (27–29°C), and a natural reef that creates playful lefts and rights. Expect fun, rideable waves rather than heavy surf—perfect for relaxed sessions, progression, and mixing surfing with other watersports.

Learn to surf with us in Zanzibar on our daily beginner surf trips. These sessions are perfect if you’ve never surfed before, have tried a few times, or can already stand up but are still learning how to ride waves.

Whats included:

Surf equipment
(surfboard, reef shoes)
On-land surf lesson & safety briefing
Technique basics, ocean awareness, and reef safety
Short boat trip to the surf spot
All Zanzibar surf breaks are located on the reef and are only accessible by boat
1.5–2 hours of surf time

Surfing in Zanzibar

Zanzibar offers fun, consistent beginner-friendly waves with average swells between 1 m and 1.5 m during the season.
Our surf season runs:

December to March and June to September

All surf trips are carefully scheduled around tides and daily conditions, so departure times change every day. Please check with us at least one day in advance for the next day’s schedule and availability.

Important Information

Surfing on your own is not recommended due to rip currents, shallow reef sections, and sea urchins.
Surfboard rental is included in our guided trips only. Boards cannot be rented separately or kept after the lesson.
Due to tidal conditions, Zanzibar typically allows one surf session per day, lasting between 1.5 and up to 3 hours under optimal conditions.
